Palazzo Mora Exhibition Time, Space, Existence – 2021 Venice Architectural Biennial 2021

  • Location: Venice
  • Date: May 2021

This exhibit presents innovative material and construction methods that have the potential to provide safe and dignified housing in South Africa in a more affordable and sustainable manner.

Chipped biomass derived from water-thirsty invading alien plants (IAP’s) can be used as a substitute for sand and stone as aggregate to create a more sustainable alternative to conventional concrete, a bio-concrete. This material combined with geometry-based, compression loading design presents a viable alternative to conventional construction methods and results in a significant reduction in the consumption of resources and enables the use of a locally sourced, sustainable, yet structurally sound building material.

This exhibit is the result of a collaboration between the Block Research Group (BRG) at the ETH Zurich, South Africa’s Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and nonCrete.com

It is part of the Venice Biennial Architecture exhibition “Time Space Existence” organised by the European Cultural Centre (ECC).
