Apartheid’s spatial planning forcibly evicted many non-white South Africans and excluded them from decisions about their homes, built environments and livelihoods.
By contrast, nonCrete’s co-design and construction framework is a beneficiary-led process in which stakeholders’ needs are prioritised and local knowledge is valued.
The process is consultative, inclusive and iterative. Through the use of tactile scaled models that are easily interpreted, the consultation process allows community members to examine, discuss and ultimately vet the design.
They hold the power as they are co-creators in a democratic design dialogue. The final design is formally approved through pre-existing community structures.
