This research project is an offshoot of the development of the funicular flooring system which proposes to replace conventional shuttering with traditional woven mats when casting arched floor slabs.
The beautiful, subtle patterned rendering of the woven mats in the concrete is a source of inspiration and we are looking to incorporate it into other parts of the building.
Ideally, mats would be sourced from communities in the vicinity of the construction site, thereby creating local work opportunities and celebrating indigenous crafts.
